2010 Gruber Justice Prize

Through advocacy, legal reform and the use of international law as a means of safeguarding human rights, Michael Kirby, John Dugard and the Indian Law Resource Center have helped make equal justice under law a reality for groups that historically have been the victims of systemic discrimination.

A leading participant in the adoption of the United Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the Indian Law Resource Center has used international law to assert the rights of indigenous peoples in the Americas for more than thirty years.

 
         
    John Dugard
 

As a lawyer, writer and teacher, John Dugard stood up for the victims of apartheid, helping to challenge apartheid laws and participating in the negotiation that led to the adoption of a constitution based on human rights in post-apartheid South Africa.

 
         
    Michael Kirby
  A retired justice of the High Court of Australia, Michael Kirby has championed the cause of victims of unjust regimes and discrimination based on sexual orientation, and has played a major role in the development of international human rights law, including laws relating to privacy and HIV/AIDS.
