Current Genetics Selection Advisory Board Member Allan C. Spradling Allan C. Spradling is director of the Department of Embryology at the Carnegie Institution in Baltimore, and an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He is well known for identifying and analyzing stem cells in their normal context within tissues. Together with Gerry Rubin, he developed a general method to introduce DNA into the Drosophila genome and founded the Berkeley Drosophila Genome Project, providing ready access to fruit fly genes for fellow researchers. A 2008 laureate of the Gruber Genetics Prize, Spradling has received many other awards and honors including (with Rubin) the Newcomb Cleveland Prize, the Molecular Biology Award of the National Academy of Sciences, the E.G. Conklin Award of the Society for Developmental Biology and the G. W. Beadle Award of the Genetics Society of America.
