Trustee Advisory Board Dr. Tomas Hökfelt Tomas Hökfelt received his PhD (1968) and MD (1971) from Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden, where he was appointed Professor in 1979. In 1981/82 he was Fogarty Scholar at the NIMH in Bethesda, MD. A student of the late Nils-Åke Hillarp, his research has focused on neurotransmitters and their functions, a seminal discovery being coexistence of multiple messenger molecules in a single neuron. Dr. Hökfelt has co-authored more than 1,000 papers, is member of several academies, including The National Academy of Sciences USA, Academia Europaea and the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences, holds five honorary doctorates, has been/is member of Scientific Advisory Boards of the Max-Planck Institute of Psychiatry (Munich) and Experimental Medicine (Göttingen) and others, and was a member of the Prize Committee for The Neuroscience Prize of the Peter and Patricia Gruber Foundation and consultant to the Foundation. He has received numerous awards, including The Bristol-Myers Award for Distinguished Achievement in Neuroscience Research and the Grand Medaille from the Academie des Sciences (Paris).
